MSG Mike Wetzel


MSG Mike Wetzel entered the Army as a legal specialist in 1986 after graduating high school that year in Honolulu, Hawaii. During his first duty assignment in Frankfurt, Germany, he volunteered at American Forces Network Europe and cross-trained into broadcast journalism in 1989. MSG Wetzel comes to AFN-Hessen after serving with Third Army at Fort McPherson, Ga., where he was the first NCOIC of the Digital Video and Imagery Distribution System (DVIDS). He worked with deployed public affairs units in Iraq and Afghanistan to help distribute live feeds, videos, images and publications to interested civilian and military media. MSG Wetzel is now on his sixth overseas tour and third in Germany. He served four previous tours with AFN, most recently as Station Commander of AFN Livorno at Camp Darby, Italy. Other assignments include the AFRTS NewsCenter in Alexandria, Va. and the 4th PSYOPS Group at Fort Bragg, N.C. He’s also spent mission time in Namibia, Haiti, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and Qatar. MSG Wetzel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Maryland. He is married to Erica and they have two daughters, Jillian and Marisa.
